Knowing When To Have Your Septic Tank Pumped

Blog

As a new homeowner, you quickly learn that you are responsible for maintaining every aspect of your household and property. If your land includes a septic system, routine pumping of the contents is necessary so the system remains in good working order. Here are some signs that alert you it is time to make a call to a local septic service to come to your property to conduct a pumping session.

An Unpleasant Odor Is Noticeable

Most homeowners contact septic services as soon as they smell an unfavorable odor coming from drains or toilets in their homes. The odor may also be noticed outdoors around the drain field area. When a septic tank fills, there is less available space for gases emitted from waste to be contained. These gases then seep out through cracks or small holes and are noticed lingering in the air. When you smell an odor similar to sulfur or sewage, contact a septic service for an evaluation before it becomes more pungent.

An Alarm Indicates The Tank Is Full

Some homeowners have alarm systems hooked up to their septic systems to help them determine when tanks are full. Check inside your basement or garage for a wired box hanging on a wall close to the area of your home where your tank is located. The box may have an audible alert or simply a light that comes on when it is time to have the tank pumped.

Sluggishness When Flushing Or Draining

One telltale sign that your septic is becoming full is when you notice toilets are not flushing in their entirety or at a slower rate. Drains will also take longer to rid themselves of any water in tubs or sinks. If you notice a slowdown in the elimination of water when you want to push it toward your septic tank, it is time to have an assessment done to see if a pump out is needed.

Water Is Accumulating Outdoors Or Backing Up Indoors

A full tank means wastewater settles in other areas. Pooled-up water around your septic tank area or drain field is a sure sign the tank is full or the septic system is in need of repair work. If there is a blockage in the piping system, water will not flush or drain from inside of your home at all and instead will back up into toilets, tubs, or sinks. This is an emergency situation where a septic pump out is needed immediately.

However, I learned quickly as we built our septic tank. Through the process, I also researched a lot of alternatives to ensure we got the perfect septic system for our needs. If you are building on a new property and you don't have the option of sewer, this blog has everything you need to know about septic systems. I truly love to help others, and I hope these posts help you.
